How High Do I Need to Rank?

When it comes to results pages how high is “high enough”? The percentage of people clicking on each link has been a closely guarded secret for some time, but I came across some information that has let the cat out of the bag. The data is a little old and comes from an AOL release back in 2007, however, I believe this hasn’t changed much at all, and, if anything, the percentages are even higher on the top three results!

Here’s the figures:

This shows that the reward for being ranked in the top spot is much higher than if you were in the number two spot. If you’re outside the top three then the traffic you’re getting is only a fraction of what it could be. It’s also worth highlighting that only 10% of results clicked are on page two. Personally, when I am searching for something, I never bother going that far, and assume most others don’t either.
